I kept telling myself I’m too dumb, this is going to take forever, and I’ll never be able to finish. The day I went into the GED program, I kept thinking of excuses to not go. Monique getting ready for class at the SGU Business Education Department. I have a lot of self-doubt, but when I think about my kids, I push myself to do better. I want people to see that no matter the situation, lifestyle, or struggles you go through, you can still do anything you put your mind to. When I later decided to pursue my GED, in some ways, I wanted to prove that I can rise up and overcome all the bad things in my life. I was almost done with high school, but I didn’t have much support when I had my son at the age of 17, so I had to quit. What stuck with me the most during the few years I lived with them is that hard work pays off! Just because I was raised in a certain way doesn’t mean I have to follow that path. I was able to act my age and only worry about school. After several deaths in my family, I was passed from family member to family member until I ended up in the juvenile detention center.Ī distant relative took me in and I was amazed that I had a mother and father figure. I hated my life and wanted nothing more than to be an adult so I could leave. My grandma raised me and she gave me what she could. I didn’t have a good childhood because my parents were absent. Most of all, she has a future that is bright and full of hope.I am 23 years old and a mother of three. Selena once dreamed of all the things she has today-her GED, a child, a relationship, her father’s love, and a comfortable home. This is something that she didn’t realize she would be able to achieve! But thanks to the help of the Equus Workforce Solutions staff for helping her remained focused on her goals, she is a step closer to realizing her post-secondary goal. Selena soon made an appointment with the Educational Opportunity Center and will now attend Luzerne County Community College to become a paralegal. She could not stop smiling when she heard her final score and realized she received her GED. Passing scores were also received in Reading and Language Arts on March 1, 2022, Science on March 3, 2022, and Math on March 10, 2022. Quickly, Selena passed the Social Studies portion of the GED test on February 24, 2022. She promised she was ready to do the work she started in 2020 and pass the four sections of the GED test. After they settled, she reached out to the Luzerne County CareerLink and the Young Adult Program with the goal of getting her GED.Įquus Workforce Solutions staff at the Luzerne County CareerLink were more than happy to accept her into the program on February 18, 2022. Selena and her family moved to Luzerne County with her father and settled in a small town that has access to transportation, health care, education, housing, and food. The joy brought by the arrival of her baby girl signaled it was time to have faith in herself and finish her GED preparation. Her heart was filled with love as she enjoyed taking care of her baby with her boyfriend. She reconnected with her father when her baby was born. This put a new focus on what she wanted for her life and the life of the baby to come. While Selena struggled with studying for a GED, she received the news that she was expecting a baby girl. It was hard for Selena to keep motivated and have access to a computer to focus on the required online assignments for the GED program. Gone were the days of attending class in person. Unfortunately, this was just as the pandemic started in early 2020. There was little hope of a bright future most days.Īlthough Selena was surrounded by bad influences and situations bringing her down, she still had thoughts of wanting to finish her high school education and dreamed of living in a loving home.Īfter some time on the streets, she asked the Berks County CareerLink staff to help her acquire her GED. Drugs and human trafficking were abundant. It wasn’t long before she was introduced to the wrong people taking her in for protection and she then soon realized the loss of a child-like innocence in a street-wise society.
